Steven James Wait died peacefully on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 1:10 p.m. at Kaweah Delta Hospital-Oncology floor. He was 65.
A service will be held at Three Rivers Arts Center on Saturday, June 10, at 1:30 p.m.
Steve was born March 13, 1952, in Aida, Okla. He was raised in Avenal, Calif., and graduated from Avenal High School in 1970.
Steve attended college in Fresno and majored in Computer Science. Upon earning his degree, he moved to Orange County and went to work for IBM. After being laid off from IBM, Steve moved to Three Rivers and started his own computer repair/network support business. On Steve’s Facebook page, he lists himself first as a musician/song writer; computer repair is listed second.
According to his friend, Nolan Allen: “Steve loved playing music. He learned to play guitar and sing at an early age. His early influences were bands of the early 1960s and ‘70s. Through his life, however, he enjoyed learning many styles of music and would play/sing for hours on end.
“Steve toured through Montana and Idaho in the ‘70s with a group called Shadowfax, which included Chuck Anderson, Nick Frankovich, Dave Allen, and Nolan Allen.
“He also played in a Three Rivers band, Oak Grove, that included John Castleman, Kevin Berry, Mary Harris, Dave Allen, and Nolan Allen, as well as dear friend Gordon Marshall.
“Steve loved to write songs and honed the craft, studying song format and lyric writing with friends John Castleman, Nolan Allen, and Nona Keith.
“Steve made professional recordings of some songs with professionals in Nashville and pitched the songs he wrote to companies such as CD Baby and Taxi.
“Steve was talented but humble. At times, we lived under the same roof and struggled to survive as we strived in our music endeavors. We love and miss our lifelong friend and music brother.”
Steve was preceded in death by his father, J.R. Wait, and sister Kimberly Ann Wait.
He is survived by his mother, Rozell Wait; sister Karla Wait; son Kelly Wait; stepdaughter Jaime Wren Peterson Wait; grandson Marcus Wait; his best friend and companion, Sonja Caselli; his brother of the heart, Trent Jacob Coleman; and many dear and special friends.
The family would like to thank Nina Dodd and Gail Vierra Lyman for their many years of love and friendship and especially for their help during Steve’s last few months. His gentle spirit will be greatly missed.
