Rowena Nemetz: 1924 ~ 2019

Rowena F. Nemetz of Three Rivers died Tuesday, March 12, 2019, in San Diego, Calif. She was 94.
Rowena was born March 28, 1924, in Pocatello, Idaho. She was raised in Santa Monica, Calif., and graduated from Santa Monica High School.
Rowena was an artist and a traveler. She and her husband, Donald Nemetz, were married in 1943 and traveled the world together, exploring North and Central America, China, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Liberia, and Nigeria.
The family also explored the world by see, sailing the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Atlantic oceans, the latter which included a trans-Atlantic crossing on a 40-foot sailboat. But as much as Rowena loved these adventures, she was always thrilled to return to her “spiritual home” on North Fork Drive in Three Rivers.
As an artist, Rowena’s creations included paintings, sculptures, and writing. In many of the countries she traveled to she would promote the local artists by organizing art schools and exhibitions.
Rowena was a kind person who touched many lives. She will be missed.
Rowena was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Donald E. Nemetz (1917-2007).
She is survived by her son, Bradley Nemetz and wife Virginia; her granddaughter Clea Huston and husband Ron; great-granddaughter Lucy June Huston; her adopted son, Tesfaye Demeke and wife Dodo and their son and daughter, Michael and Afonina; her niece/daughter, Carol
Hendriks; goddaughter Lauren Leech; and sister Dori Rose and Dori’s extended family.
A service will be held Saturday, March 30, 3 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1634 Hillsdale Road, El Cajon. A reception will follow at Vida Riel, 11588 Via Rancho San Diego in San Diego.
