Doris Burris: 1922 ~ 2018

Doris Ann Burris, a former resident of Three Rivers, died Friday, March 2, 2018, in Redondo Beach, Calif. She was 95.

A service will be  held Saturday, March 24, 11 a.m., at White & Day Colonial Mortuary, 901 Torrance Blvd., Redondo  Beach.

Doris was born March 22, 1922, in Bentonville, Ark., to William Ray Bright and Edna May Bright. She was raised in Ojai, Calif., and attended schools there.

On November 22, 1939, the former Doris Bright married Owen Hubert “Bob” Burris in Las Vegas. The Burrises resided in Southern California where they raised their two sons.

In 1979, the couple moved to Three Rivers. On the occasion their 60th wedding anniversary, Bob and Doris shared the story of their Las Vegas nuptials:

Doris’s wedding dress cost $1.98, the marriage license cost $2, and the wedding service was conducted for $5.

Just think, some pay thousands for weddings and receptions only to have the relationship end before it even gets started. Bob and Doris shelled out 10 bucks, and 60 years later they’re still going strong...

[Their honeymoon] included a trip to Hoover Dam... At the time the Burrises were visiting, Lake Mead was still filling with the recently tamed Colorado  River water. (The Kaweah Commonwealth, February 4, 2000)

In 2001, Doris left her Three Rivers home of 22 years to move to Redondo Beach to be closer to family.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bob (1919-2001).

She is survived by her sons, Michael L. Burris and Patrick O. Burris; and grandchildren Kurt and wife Karen Burris, Michelle Burris, and Derek Burris.
