Daryl was born in Elderwood on February 22, 1923. He was raised in the Visalia area and graduated from Visalia Union High School where he met the love of his life, Bonnie Anderson. They were married in 1943.

Daryl attended Visalia Junior College (present-day College of the Sequoias) and then transferred to Texas A&M to study for an engineering degree. However, soon after, he reported for active duty in the U.S. Army.

He was stationed in Germany and France and served in the 410th Infantry Regiment as Squad Leader Light Machine Gun. While serving, he was promoted to staff sergeant. After the war was over, he was honorably discharged and returned to Visalia where he lived and raised his family of six children.

As a youth, Daryl was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and was one of the first in Tulare County to achieve Eagle Scout status. He loved to tell stories of his time spent at Boy Scout camp, like the time he was appointed as a lifeguard but he didn't know how to swim. So he taught himself how by swimming across Hume Lake.

In October 2015, Daryl participated in the Central Valley Honor Flight's eighth trip to provide free trips to World War II veterans to visit the war memorials in Washington, D.C. This trip of a lifetime was made possible by his dear friend, Jacque Randolph, who accompanied him. When he returned, Daryl told his family that the trip was a highlight of his life.

Daryl was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Bonnie.

He is survived by a large and loving family, including his six children, four daughters, Judy Correia, Peggy Tristao, Joyce Allen, Alice Payne and husband Sam, and two sons, Michael Stokes and Tom Stokes and wife Sherrie; grandchildren Shelly Bressoud, Renee Muniz-Irving, Robert Bullock, Brett Bullock, Donna Stevens, Rick Castleman, Beverly Davis, Steve Allen, David Payne, Sallie Martin, Darren Payne, Derek Stokes, Bryan Stokes, Kayla Faught, and Jennifer Garcia; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
