Grass fire starts at Potwisha

On a busy Sunday afternoon, there are hundreds of visitors in Sequoia National Park, many of whom either camp at Potwisha or use the area to access the river. With so many folks in the area, it was suspicious there were no witnesses when a fire suddenly started on May 18 in the vicinity of the Potwisha overflow parking adjacent to the dump station.

NPS and Cal Fire personnel responded and quickly extinguished the blaze that burned a 40-square-foot patch of dry vegetation. With the entire Kaweah canyon a tinder box because of the ongoing drought, every spark has the potential to become a disaster.

The cause of the grass fire is unknown and is currently under investigation.
