APRIL 2014: It's spring! Due to minimal rainfall over the past winter, wildflowers aren't as prolific as in some years, but the hardiest of species are still providing a palette of color on the mountainsides, currently in peak bloom at about 2,000 feet elevation. Above: California's state flower, the golden poppy. Below: Datura (also known as Jimson weed) is a toxic, foul-smelling plant that has a beautiful, fragrant bloom.
